Location Description: On Hollywood Blvd. South Florida gets Skunk Ape fever. The craze starts at 12:40 a.m. on Jan. 9 when motorist Richard Lee Smith, 35, tells Florida Highway Patrol troopers he sideswiped a hairy “8-foot creature” with his Cadillac on U.S. 27 near Hollywood Boulevard. “The guy hit something. It was dark and at night and he doesn’t know what he hit,” a skeptical FHP Sgt. Charles Marrs tells reporters. “Nothing there indicated there was a big monster.” Reported on channel 7 local news and Miami Herald January 10, 1974.
