EAST MANATEE – Something deadly is on the prowl in East Manatee County, and the rural homesteads and farm animals have made good targets for the creature that has killed at least two dogs and attacked a miniature show pony.
The animal struck sometime on Saturday night, brazenly creeping into a stable on Verna Bethany Road owned by Doug and Bonnie Wimmer.
The animal seemed to have targeted Tivo, a miniature show pony. But two big dogs owned by the Wimmers took on the creature, said Jean Palumbo, a east Sarasota County resident who co-owns Tivo.
The Wimmers heard nothing of the fight. On Sunday morning they found both dogs lying on the ground severely injured. Their wounds were so bad, a vet put them down. The horse was maimed but alive.
“They went to its defense – it cost them their lives,” Palumbo said.
The vet said the injuries could have been caused by some kind of big cat.
The ear of Tivo, the miniature horse, was shredded and it had cuts on his neck but was otherwise unharmed.
“It seems very brazen of an animal to come into an area with dogs and buildings and attack livestock that way,” Palumbo said.
The investigation into the incident is continuing.
