Web site Cryptomundo.com’s correspondents Eric Altman and Paul Johnson have sent along word today that Pennsylvania Bigfoot researcher Sam Sherry, 86, has passed away. Sherry died at the Veteran’s Hospital yesterday, February 22, 2008, at 1 p.m.

The viewing and funeral will be at Snyder’s funeral home in Ligonier, Pennsylvania.

Altman writes: “For those who knew Sam or had the pleasure of meeting Sam, he was one of a kind and a real character….

Even into his 80’s, without sight or hearing, Sam still traveled up to the Chestnut Ridge to hunt for Bigfoot. I spent most of my early days researching with Sam. Unfortunately I had not seen him in the past few years. He will be sadly missed.”

Whenever historians uncover some new bit of information about heroes of the past, it’s usually nothing we want to hear. This one kept slaves. That one had a passel of illegitimate children. Some other dude once slapped a nun. George Washington never chopped down any cherry tree and therefore never had an opportunity to be all sanctimonious about how he couldn’t tell a lie.

People who believe in Bigfoot will be trudging through the West Virginia woods in a couple of months hoping for a close encounter with the legendary creature.

The Mountain State has been picked by the Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization, considered the nation’s authority on the search for Sasquatch, as the site of an April expedition. Based on the number of recent reports by people who claim they’ve seen the hairy apelike animal in person, Bigfoot experts and devoted believers think there’s a good shot they’ll find some evidence of its existence in the state.
